Shearing Traineeship Changes 13 Jan 2020
The Training Council is pleased to announce that the WA Minister for Education and Training has approved changes to the Shearing (Level 2) Traineeship. Following industry requests, the duration of the Traineeship has been increased from 6 months to 9 months and is now also available to school students.
The number of people commencing a Shearing Traineeship increased strongly in 2019, due to an increase in demand by industry to train local people in shearing. Good prices for sheep and wool in recent years and competition from New Zealand for labour has resulted in a shortage of local shearers.
Almost all of the training for Shearing Trainees is on the job with South Regional TAFE providing guidance, support and formal assessment of competence. The new Western Australian employer incentives, combined with the Commonwealth employer incentives, make training via the Traineeship even more attractive.
