Why is career development so important?

Anchor 2

Career development is the process of managing life, learning, and work over the life span. Effective career support has an influence on education, employment and training, impacting in better labour market matching, an individual’s wellbeing and overall productivity. These are important aspects of labor market policies and the health and wellbeing of the community.

Everyone deserves equal access to information and resources to support their career choices, aspirations, achievements and lifelong prosperity, however, this if often not the case. Access is often impeded by socio economic status including access to role modeling, social networks and confidence. In Australia, there are inequalities of access to career development interventions amongst young people and this can negatively impact their life trajectory.

In Australia, the peak body for career development is the Career Industry Council of Australia also known as CICA. They look after guidelines including the Australian Blueprint for Career Development, Professional Standards for Australian Career Development Practitioners and the Guiding Principles for Career Development Services and Career Information Products. It is recommended that people who are in the careers profession, hold a post graduate qualification in career development and are professional members of a CICA approved career development association
