FFTITC Visits Bunbury

The Board of the FFTITC recently visited Bunbury to hold its first regional Board meeting. The tour began at Wespine sawmill, was followed by the Board meeting at ECU, then a networking forum "Engaging the Zoomers".

Some learnings from the day:

  • Wespine is highly technical with largely autonomous processing of timber. 100% of the tree is used and they have 200+ staff manning a 24 hour operation. They are strong supporters of apprenticeships with several employed covering electrical, fitting and mechanical trades.

  • ECU South West (Bunbury Campus) has attracted a new Creative Industries Hub and is doing lots of innovative projects around immersive technology and virtual learning environments.

  • South Regional TAFE has over 10,000 students and currently delivers over 300 qualifications. They are delivering some great programs, particularly in horticulture, conservation and ecosystem management and wool handling.

  • We now have up to 5 generations working in some businesses and in 2033, 32% of the workforce will be from Gen Z.
